The LPG installer asked for the engine code for a valuation and you don’t know where to find it? In cars of various brands, the engine code may have a different location. Below we explain where the engine code is located.
Engine code in the service book
The easiest way to find the engine code is to reach for the vehicle’s service book. The back cover should contain the following information:
- date of manufacture of the car,
- VIN number,
- paint code,
- gearbox information,
- vehicle equipment,
- engine code.
Engine code on the nameplate
Similar car details – including the engine code – can also be found on the nameplate. Depending on the brand and model of the car, you should look for the plate in different places. The most common are:
- the engine compartment, one of its cups – usually the right one (if you are standing in front of the open car hood, look on the left side, right behind the coolant reservoir),
- timing cover,
- the area around the gearbox,
- B-pillar after opening the front doors (if you can’t find the code on the driver’s side, check on the passenger’s side).
Engine code on the sticker in the trunk
It happens that the engine code is located in the trunk. If you think this might be the case with your car, look in the spare wheel area. On the right side of the recess there should be a sticker containing the most important vehicle data, along with the engine code.
When the car does not have a dedicated space for the spare wheel, look for the sticker under the upholstery/trunk mat. It will usually be stickered on the left side.
How to check the engine code by VIN?
The engine code is not included in the VIN number. However, if you only have the VIN number and want to know the engine code, you can use online VIN decoders. When you enter the number, they will show you basic vehicle data, among which should be the engine code.
Is the engine code in the registration certificate?
No – you will not find the engine code in the car’s registration certificate. The only vehicle document that contains information about the engine code is the service book.
